On November 7th, 2019, with the theme of “Creating a Core”, Vivo and Samsung held a dual-mode 5G AI chip media communication meeting in Beijing.
Around the vice president of the company, Samsung Electronics LSI product planning team captain Zhao Zhuangyi executive, Samsung Semiconductor China Institute Director/Executive Mr. Pan Xuebao and other guests attended the event. The two parties demonstrated the joint development of dual-mode 5G AI chips – Exynos 980.
Exynos 980 combines the technological innovation advantages of Samsung and Vivo, integrates superior dual-mode 5G and AI capabilities, and brings richer 5G experience to more consumers, accelerating the development and industrialization of the 5G industry.
Vivo and Samsung chip joint research and development to accelerate the 5G industry process
With the consumer demand and technological innovation as the development direction, Vivo has always brought extraordinary products and experiences to consumers. Vivo has already begun to participate in the formulation of 5G standards in advance and has made technical reserves. With the unremitting pursuit and exploration of technology, Vivo has applied for more than 2,000 5G invention patents and submitted more than 3,000 5G proposals to 3GPP, which has become the influence of 3GPP. One of the most powerful terminal brands, and won the first batch of 5G mobile phone 3C certification in China, becoming the backbone of China’s 5G popularization.
Nowadays, consumers’ demand for mobile phones is clearly widening horizontally. This feature determines that the development of technology must be more forward-looking. In order to better capture the changes in consumer demand for mobile phones in the future, the pace of research and development of the Vivo technology side is also on the way. Today’s consumer demand for mobile phones is no longer limited to appearance and basic functions. It also places higher demands on mobile phone performance and differentiated features. These requirements require the underlying support of the chip. In the exploration of the 5G era, Vivo is further involved in the technological development of the upstream of the industrial chain, achieving breakthroughs in the chip side.
The joint development of Exynos 980 chip with Samsung is of great significance for accelerating the popularization of 5G mobile phones. The Vice President of Vivo said around this: “Vivo and Samsung cooperate with each other to ensure the development progress and efficiency. The overall progress is 2-3 months ahead of schedule. The dual-mode 5G mobile phone equipped with this chip will be able to meet consumers during the year. This has greatly enriched the choice of 5G terminals, bringing richer 5G experience to more consumers and accelerating the development of the 5G industry. Popularization and industrialization process.”
Deeply cultivating mobile SoCs for many years, Samsung Semiconductor has successfully established a leading position in the high-end market. Up to now, among the manufacturers with 5G baseband and application processor R&D capabilities in the market, Samsung is the only company with independent research and development and independent operation of semiconductor production lines. It has no doubt in the cooperation of technology and design. In cooperation with Vivo, Zhao Zhuangqi, the captain of the Samsung Electronics S.LSI merchandising team, said: “The ubiquitous 5G and AI worlds will bring unimaginable changes to life with unlimited possibilities. In this new adventure At the same time, Vivo and Samsung’s LSI have worked closely together to develop new 5G communication technologies to meet the needs of market and technology enthusiasts.”
Industry’s first dual-mode 5G SoC Exynos 980 brings new 5G and AI experiences
As the industry’s first dual-mode 5G SoC product, the Exynos 980 chip supports both NSA and SA networking modes, providing consumers with a richer 5G experience. The Exynos 980 enables ultra-high-speed data communication, enabling download rates up to 2.55 Gbps in a 5G communication environment, ie, sub-6 GHz, in the 4G-5G Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) state. The download rate can be up to 3.55Gbps. In addition, the Exynos 980 integrates the 5G baseband into the SoC, which saves board space and leaves more room for the fuselage design, while scheduling between components is faster and more efficient.
In addition to the richer 5G experience, the Exynos 980’s AI computing power is also fully optimized. High-performance CPU, GPU, NPU, DSP, ISP, modem and other components work together to achieve the flagship level of artificial intelligence computing performance. For the first time, the Exynos980 uses ARM’s next-generation Cortex-A77 CPU architecture, which offers a 20% improvement in co-frequency performance over the Cortex-A76 architecture, ensuring fast processing of large amounts of data. With the high-end GPU MaliTM-G76, HD games are easy to run. The Exynos 980 has built-in high-performance NPU and DSP units for flagship computing speeds, as well as a built-in high-performance ISP that can handle images taken at up to 108 million pixels, and works with powerful NPUs to recognize the shape of the subject, the surrounding environment, etc. , automatically adjust to a better value, allowing users to easily take better pictures.
A multi-capacity, high-performance, cross-platform mobile AI acceleration platform, VCAP (Computation Acceleration Platform), is used to predict and predict AI algorithms, model training and model acceleration on mobile devices. VCAP takes full advantage of the advantages and computing power of the underlying hardware on the device, accelerates the deployment and efficient operation of the AI algorithm on the side of the Vivo device, and enables the mobile device to implement the on-device AI with autonomic computing. For example, using the underlying technology to achieve high-performance results of the algorithm on the end side, supporting the real-time, smooth and low-power experience of intelligent business scene users. Through VCAP, it can support more intelligent algorithms to run offline in the terminal, and provide users with offline AI application scene experience, such as album classification, scene recognition, video summary, etc., which are not limited by network dependence and network transmission instability. And response delay effects, get a more timely response and experience on the mobile side.
Vivo terminal advantage and strong R&D accumulation to help joint research and development
In the past ten years, Vivo has accumulated rich experience in the software and hardware of intelligent terminals. This time, Vivo went deep into the pre-definition stage of the chip, and jointly developed Exynos 980 with Samsung. From the perspective of end-user demand, it aims to create “born”. A chip that fits the consumer’s expectations. In order to be able to better meet the needs of consumers, Vivo has fully utilized its own insights and technical accumulation advantages for consumers.
In addition, a total of more than 500 professional R&D engineers have been invested in vivo before and after 10 months. The accumulated intangible assets of up to 400 functional features (including modem-related proportions) are added to the Samsung platform, and Samsung is collaborating on the hardware level. Nearly 100 technical issues, together with Samsung to complete the joint design and development of products in advance.
Vivo and Samsung continue to optimize the 5G scene, providing international roaming optimization solutions, power consumption solutions for 5G scenarios, and game delay solutions. In addition, Vivo and Samsung share their own insights into the use of the terminal, providing support in the system resource integration scheduling framework and the establishment of game performance testing standards to enhance the user experience in high-frequency usage scenarios.
In addition, Vivo also relies on R&D to help optimize the performance of the Exynos 980 in key features such as cameras. Based on previous camera development experience, Vivo has contributed more than 100 camera-related features to the Exynos 980 platform, including algorithms, dual-camera, and three-camera channel design, which significantly improved the algorithm.
For the 5G era, Vivo continues to accelerate the upgrade of intelligent terminals and smart services to further enhance the user experience. The joint development of dual-mode 5G AI chips with Samsung will help the popularization of 5G mobile phones and the development of the 5G industry. Vivo also officially announced at the communication meeting that in December, the new generation flagship terminal equipped with the dual-mode 5G AI chip Exynos 980, the Vivo X30 series mobile phone, will meet with consumers.
